Why Connection Matters

We are experiencing an epidemic of loneliness, according to Dr. Vivek Murthy, former U.S. Surgeon General’s report on Loneliness and Isolation. We are feeling lonely at home, work, and in community- about half of US adults report feeling lonely, with the highest rates among young adults.

Loneliness is detrimental leading to stress, stroke, heart disease, depression, early mortality- comparable to “smoking 15 cigarettes per day.” Loneliness affects how we show up every day—at home, we feel disconnected from loved ones; at work, it weakens team dynamics and organizational culture; and in our communities, many of us feel unseen, even in a crowd.
